YLA 21: Amexican@ artist Chris Montoya will lead a hands on mural painting workshop at HOPE Outdoor Gallery. Guests will sketch, paint, and detail the large scale collaborative mural with aerosol paint and techniques from Montoya. Refreshments and snacks provided.

Christopher Montoya’s work is an amalgamation of traditional and contemporary icons and symbols utilizing old and new techniques. His work includes many street murals and commercial work in San Antonio’s inner city, but he also exhibits in the San Antonio gallery circuit. In 'Hood Rich' (exhibited in YLA 21), the artist employs a billboard format and a muted color palette to evoke an analog setting. He then infuses the piece with contemporary symbols, in this case, fashion advertising, to depict the ironic relationship between media driven materialism and the people from his largely impoverished community. Montoya serves his community as a muralist, often depicting historical and cultural heroes in an effort to bring awareness and pride to the city’s Latina/o communities.
